Comunicat després del Consell de Govern de la UPF

Avui, 4 de juny de 2024, el Consell de Govern de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra ha tingut l’oportunitat de posicionar-se contra el genocidi i l’apartheid i a favor de la llibertat palestina, en línia amb les posicions adoptades recentment per la UB i la UAB. Fer-ho exigia trencar la cadena de complicitats amb els crims de l’Estat d’Israel que travessen les relacions de la UPF amb diverses universitats i empreses israelianes. En canvi, el Consell de Govern ha aprovat una moció feble, deliberadament superficial i sense compromisos substancials o materials.

El Consell de Govern s’ha negat a recollir i plasmar les demandes que des de fa mesos han formulat els col·lectius en solidaritat amb Palestina de la UPF, com a part del moviment universitari català, de l’Estat espanyol i mundial pel boicot acadèmic i econòmic a l’Estat d’Israel mentre continuï amb el genocidi, l’apartheid i l’ocupació il·legal de Palestina. Quan l’equip rectoral de la universitat va rebre les nostres demandes, va decidir transformar-les en un comunicat superficial i desproveït de qualsevol compromís real o concret.

Hem exigit, i continuarem exigint, el reconeixement explícit de les causes estructurals i la intenció genocida del projecte colonial israelià; la suspensió immediata i incondicional de totes les relacions acadèmiques i empresarials amb les institucions còmplices; que la Universitat faci una crida a la Generalitat de Catalunya, al Govern d’Espanya i a la Comissió Europea perquè posin fi a les seves diverses formes d’inversió i vincles amb Israel. El compromís d’una institució com la UPF d’acabar amb l’apartheid i el genocidi no consisteix a publicar declaracions buides, en gran mesura; al contrari: requereix un boicot clar i inequívoc a qualsevol institució que participi en aquests crims.

Observem que, malgrat el llenguatge problemàtic que utilitza el Consell de Govern de la UPF, referint-se exclusivament a suspendre els llaços amb les universitats israelianes que “ja sigui explícitament o a través de programes o iniciatives específiques, donen suport a les activitats de l’exèrcit israelià a la Franja de Gaza”, ara la universitat ha de trencar immediatament els vincles amb les cinc universitats israelianes amb les quals actualment té acords i/o col·laboracions: la Universitat de Tel-Aviv, la Universitat Hebrea de Jerusalem, la Universitat de Haifa, la Universitat Reichman i la Universitat Bar Ilan. Les cinc institucions exerceixen sense cap dubte un paper actiu en l’apartheid israelià i la matança perpetrada per l’exèrcit israelià a Gaza. No obstant això, sostenim que la declaració emesa avui no satisfà la urgència d’aquest moment en què el món està sent testimoni d’un genocidi que s’està agreujant ràpidament després de 76 anys d’apartheid i ocupació militar il·legal.

Després d’aquesta reacció vergonyosa i covarda per part de l’administració universitària, els grups i organitzacions de la UPF sóm clars: això no és més que el principi. No acceptarem que la nostra universitat, a través dels seus acords i col·laboracions amb institucions, empreses israelianes i totes les corporacions que són complices, ens impliqui directament en la despossessió del poble palestí i els horrors televisats que es desenvolupen a Gaza. Les nostres exigències són simples i no impliquen grans mesures. Per contra, impliquen el cessament immediat de l’acció, l’acció de donar suport a les parts cómplices i a aquelles que duen a terme el genocidi. No ens aturarem fins que la UPF deixi de ser còmplice de la injustícia imperant, ni fins que Palestina sigui lliure.

Statement after the UPF Consell de Govern

Today, June 4, 2024, the Governing Council of Universitat Pompeu Fabra had the opportunity to position itself against genocide and apartheid and in favor of Palestinian freedom, in line with the positions recently taken by the UB and the UAB. Doing so requires breaking the chain of complicity with the State of Israel’s crimes, which runs through UPF’s collaborations with Israeli universities and enterprises. Instead, the Governing Council has approved a weak motion, deliberately superficial and with insufficient substantial or material commitments.

The Governing Council has refused to express the demands that have been made for months by groups at UPF standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people. These groups are part of the Catalan, Spanish, and worldwide university-led movement echoing longstanding Palestinian demands for an academic and economic boycott of Israel, so long as it continues its genocide, apartheid and illegal occupation in Palestine. The UPF rector’s team received our demands but then transformed them into a superficial statement lacking any real or concrete commitment.

We have demanded, and will continue to demand, explicit recognition of the structural causes and genocidal intent of the Israeli colonial project; the immediate and unconditional suspension of all academic and business relations with complicit institutions; that the University call on the Generalitat of Catalunya, the Government of Spain, and the European Commission to end their various forms of investment and ties with Israel. The commitment of an institution like UPF to ending the apartheid and genocide does not consist of publishing largely empty statements; On the contrary: it requires a clear and unambiguous boycott of any institution participating in those crimes.

We note that, despite the problematic language used by the Governing Council of UPF, referring exclusively to suspending ties with Israeli universities that “either explicitly or through specific programs or initiatives, support the activities of the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip,” now that it has adopted this position the university must immediately break ties with the five Israeli universities it currently has agreements and/or collaborations with: University of Tel-Aviv, la Hebrew University of Jerusalem, la Haifa University, i la Reichman University, and Bar Ilan University. All five of these institutions unambiguously play an active part in Israeli apartheid and the IDF’s slaughter in Gaza. Still, we contend that the statement issued today fails colossally to meet the urgency of this moment in which the world is witnessing a rapidly escalating genocide after76 years of apartheid and illegal military occupation.e

After this shameful and cowardly reaction on the part of the university administration, the groups and organizations of the UPF are clear: this is nothing more than the beginning. We will not accept our university, through its agreements and collaborations with Israeli institutions, enterprises, and complicit companies, directly implicating us in the dispossession of the Palestinian people and the televised horrors unfolding in Gaza. Our demands are straightforward and unextraordinary - they do not entail grand measures. On the contrary, they entail the immediate ceasing of action - the action of supporting aparthied and genocide. We will not stop until UPF is no longer complicit in mass injustice, nor until Palestine is free.
